Choosing Your Provider

Having a Baby? Ten Questions to Ask is an excellent guide for interviewing potential care providers.

The Birth Survey is a nation-wide project where you can find out how other women have rated their care providers and birth facilities.  (If you have given birth in the past three years, we encourage you to fill out the survey yourself, as well.)

Home-birth midwives, doulas, and many other birth professionals offer free consultations.  If you are trying to interview a provider who does not advertise free consultations, ask anyway.  Unfortunately, the person who answers the phone at a provider’s office may not know how to schedule a consultation.  If they can’t help you, ask to speak to the nurse who works with the physician you are trying to interview, or ask if you can leave a voice message for the physician directly.
